what is european? (5)

Maastricht, 2005

Although Christianity has its roots in Judaism (which is a religion from the Middle East), Christian tradition is a common aspect of the European pass. During the crusade movement and the holly wars against the Muslin world in the middle age, Christianity was a strong point of identification in Europe. However, while the Southern Europeans are Roman Catholic most of north Europeans are Protestant and not ruled by the Vatican. It is possible to find strong differences in both cultures. In the pass, this common background was more a motive of war and division than of unity between people and cultures. Recently, immigration has increased Muslin, Hindu or animist population in the European States, most of times with European citizenship. Turkish presence in Germany, Algerians in France, Indians and Pakistanis in England are only few examples of the religious diversity in Europe.
